Hey guys,I was minding my own business today mowing the yard and my buddy calls me up. He said he found a 504D with a single tire front, good working three-point,good paint and sheet metal. He said the engine runs great with no smoke or abnormal noise,BUT,it has a two-inch crack in the water jacket that seeps. My friend thinks it could be braised and he's a good mechanic, but he's new to tractors. So when I asked how's the TA he said "the what", so I don't know about that part of it. What I want to know is are these good tractors? Any weaknesses or drawbacks to look for? Which wide front end will work with this tractor and about what horse power are they? The guy wants a thousand bucks for it. Does that sound like a good deal. Also, never owned a tractor with a TA before, how do you engage this one? Sorry about the flood of questions. Just when I convince myself to lay off of tractor hunting for a while... Thanks for any help.

To engage the TA, you pull the TA lever back. To go back to direct drive, you push the TA lever ahead. It's pretty simple.

Just don't pull the TA going downhill and expect it to slow you down, unless you want to destroy the tractor and splatter yourself all over whatever's waiting at the bottom of the hill. It's a mechanical TA with a one-way sprag clutch

We used to have a 504D with tricycle front. Good cultivator tractor, very economical, but can be a hard starter. The biggest problem we had was with the steering linkage. A very poor design, with a lot of ujoints, turns and twists. Always shearing the half moon key and will leave you with no steering, very dangerous if you are traveling down the road--makes the pucker factor go way up. As with most farmalls, I would guess the TA is probably shot if it has one.

I'm not going to give an opinion on this tractor's mechanical shape. You'll just have to assess this yourself.

504s are neat. Not particularlyy robust in the running gear/chassis department, but they weren't meant to be. Rather, they were a chore tractor; raking, poop speading, etc.

They are nimble as heck. Roughly 45 HP gas or diesel. A diesel would be sweet; ours is a gasser. We love it beat up and banged up though it is.
