I have a D239 German Diesel engine in my 260A backhoe that slobbers, spits and smokes out the blowby tube. If the engine is warm and I work it hard it lets out clouds of oil. It runs great although is a little hard to start. I am figuring it needs an overhaul so can I get the parts from IH? Is it expensive? This hoe has sat around a lot and done odd jobs on a farm for quite a while owned by an older guy it probbably hasn"t seen more that 12 or 13 hundred RPM in many years, certainly no load. Would this engine clear up just a little bit if I worked it at a good load and rpm for a while? I would like to wait to overhaul it until this winter when I have time. The blowby is unacceptable as it is.
Any other info on this engine or backhoe would be great!
Thanks,

Hi Yellot, the D239 is used in 574,674,684 farm tractors. Since the engine has a lot of blow by out the crankcase breather it could be caused by a stuck or broken ring.

But don't overlook the simple things first.

Good luck

Hello,
You can get the parts a lot cheaper from a ditributor of repower kits then from IH. Try BTMC corp or Worthington Ag parts. I have bought several kits from BTMC.They are good US made parts, Cleavite I think. I think the one for that motor runs $650 or so.YC

Don't overlook the obvious like air cleaner filters & the pump setting. I have a 239 that suddenly got weak & slobbered and I found the fuel shut-off, advance cable had come loose & unadjusted itself. A minute with a screwdriver & she smoothed out like new.

Have your injectors checked, change engine oil, change water thermostat to 195 degree.
