We have a M (1944) and a Super M (1953). These are both super tractors. Some of the best! We are looking for a Super M-TA but with no luck!!

I have a 1940 M, a 1951 M, and a 1953 Super M. All are used by me to farm 140 acres plus they are used to plow and plant on my neighbors organic farm. They are all used hard but are well taken care of. Reliability of these tractors is second to none. I think they are some of the best tractors ever made. I would like to see some of the new tractors of today still working in 50-60 years.

I've got the '49 M that my Dad bought in '52, and a late '52 SM that we got in '60. Both were excellent tractors. Each has been overhauled with M&W sleeve/piston kits, Thompson governors, and had the rpm limits increased. I'd hate to part with either of them. The SM is a bit more tractor, but not by much. I miss plowing with the M on a dark night with about 6" of flame coming out the top of the muffler.

1945 M, bought it at a yard sale last summer. Now I just have to save the cash to do the loader, live hydraulics, 3pt and wide front. It would be cheaper, (I know, I know) to just get something like a 656 with all this already on it, but there's just something about these letter series. Probably 'cause its what my dad had when I was little. I've still got the John Deere No. 44 plow and the John Deere single 16 steel wheel hand trips. I also have pics of dad using these plows behind an M from 1971 or so.

1951 M up in the carriage house. Best drawbar tractor ever built. Used for everything, took muffler off and pulled logs out of woods to build barn back in early 1950's, ran trashing machine off belt pulley, great corn picking tractor, and lots of power for all kinds of dirt work.
During a trip up through central Iowa last summer it appears almost every farm still has one for what seems to be auger PTO work and other "must do it" duties. Seen on more calendars then probably any other tractor. A great tractor when it was in production and still in use on thousands of farms to this day. I'm certainly glad I have one and really enjoy using it.

I have the farmall M that my grandfather bought in the war. It had no stsrter lights ect. The engine was stuck about 20 yrs. ago so Dad gave it to me to fix up. got her running but that is about it so far. Got married and had two kids, that is tanking most of the time and funds for now. someday it will be showroom ready though. My grandfather use too pollish that M until it shined and I intend to make it shine like that again.

I see that this is about M's. But I just have to get in here. Back in the early 70's cattle got up a little and when I when out buy an M I found a 400 and I thought well its an M with live pto amd lift so I bought it instead. It went with Dads B and an H that he and I bought when I got home from the service in 55. I now have a 674 also. Sorry to bore ya'll with a life story, still would like to have an M but at this late date probably won't.

Bought this 43 M 10 years ago and restored it. It was thrashed when I got it. Stuck motor, dead birds in the rear end, minneapolis moline seat, rusted out cutoffs etc.....

I drove by it for 3 years and fell in love with the old style front end....finally took the plunge. It runs awesome and is my favorite!

SMTA bought slightly used by my uncle in mid 1950's. I am a proud owner since he passed away.Tractor is stock except for aftermarket 3 point hitch. Pulls like brand new in both low and high TA. Power steering and independant pto work great. Have whipped a few pulling tractors in 6500 to 7500 classes. My uncle used to pull a two row John Deere silage cutter in good corn with this tractor.Nobody could believe it until they saw it.It's not for sale at any price as long as I can still get in the seat and hear that straight pipe talk.

Which one of us spells his name right? Kidding aside, I have a SM and SMTA both are diesels and after growing up on a M gas they are a nice addition to the shed. A lot of folks dislike the diesels but I don't think it gets any better than hearing a diesel M work in the field.

SMTA and they only made them the one year. This is one great tractor. Too big for close work around the place but I have a smaller utility that handles those jobs. This is a machine that was made to be in the field and I wouldn't part with. I love to spend a day working on it.

When I got into tractors, I was planning on collecting just the F-series, then my boss had a 1942 M for sale for $200. With a little tinkering, I got it to run the night I bought it. Since then, I have added a 1942, 1951 parts tractor (with disk brakes), and a 1945. I'm kinda partial to the WWII years, since it seems they made fewer during those years, and they meant more to the farmers who were lucky enough to get them. After working on the M's, the H's seem so small....

I bought my M with 300 Du-al loader on it in 2002 for $700. I was looking for a loader tractor, but didn't want that piece of crap. It had some broken truck seat on it, the grill was mangled, the hoses were leaking, the steering was tweaked, etc. etc. My friend that was with me said, if you don't buy it for that, I'm going to. He forced my hand. I bought it.
third party image
I fixed the steering so the right front wheel doesn't jam. Bought an original seat. Took the pto pump off and added live hydraulics. Rewired (Thanks Bob!) etc etc

I never posted at ytmag back then, but everything I did to my M I did with everyone here help. I did a lot of searching, etc. The M is presentable now and purrs like she should. I doubt I will ever restore her, but you never know. I know love my M and am never sorry I bought her.

Is a M a winner? You bet. I made a decent tractor out of one that had been neglected and abused for years with very little work.

Got my first tractor back in February 2005. A 1945 M.

I have an aftermarket 3 pt hitch on mine so that helps make it more useful to me. Live hydraulics would be nice but overall it is a great running tractor and does what I need it to do on 42 acres.

Two good M's, one H needing work, pulled out of fencerow the other day, one C, same way, and went across the state of Misery today on I-Rough 44 and got another M. Ya I know, too many of one kind, but I keep thinking Allan is gonna need one of my 806/M,s one of these days, and I want to be ready. Harley

6 Farmalls: 300, H, and the rest are M's. Two old style WFE, one M&W hand clutch, one Charlyn PS, and one very plain rusty M (but I think it has the most powerful engine.) Those who prefer H's are in error. My nickel Dick Davis
