so, point rotor at the cylinder that is in firing position. then tighten the distributor down at the moment the points open by using a voltmeter to show the current drop off? That easy right? yeah right, hope so!

Make sure the cylinder you're looking at is on the compression stroke and not exhaust.

That should get you close. If you pull the coil wire out of the cap, a spark will jump at the exact instant the points open.

Your H has timing marks, why not follow the procedure in the manual ?
