I just purchased a Farmall B, but the serial number tag was missing. Is the serial number written anywhere else on the tractor? If not, is it possible to date it by some other means?

Engine and chassis serials match from 501-201000. Check casting codes to see if they are the same year as the engine. That will tell you if engine is original, or at least replaced with one from the same year.

They also stamped an engine serial number on the block, below cylinder number one on the flat surface. unless the block has been replaced, the serial number of the engine will be close, or possibly the same, as the chassis serial number.

Look at other parts of the tractor and you should find casting numbers on them post a few of them and some one will be able to give you an idea what year it was made. Thy used an A,B,C system for years of parts being made so it would only be close

The number on the transmission case is 8638-DE and the number on the engine is 6342-DH. Any idea what year it was built?

Those are casting part numbers. The date codes are in day, month, year format. The post linked below offers some more info.

Sorry I don't know that info but, I did at least know about there system. There are other people on that have that info. I sold a 450 a few years ago and the guy that got it had a list of the codes and told me about them but didn't give me a copy
