My H is leaking trans fluid out of the break shoe area behind the cover. My question is how hard is it to change?

Thanks,
Mark

As long as you have the seals out, check the bearing that is behind the seal. When mine started leaking, the bearing was shot.

I just replaced both sides of an H. I just cut mine out with a small chisel and they came out easy. Use(2) 3/8" thick, 2.312" ID, and 3.5" OD on each side.

Make sure you double seal it. Just one won"t do for very long.

Paul,

Can you tell me what size seal puller to get? Do you have a part number from sears or a good discription.

Thanks,
Mark

Here's the Sears Part Number:
Sears item #00947645000. I hope that tells you what you need to know!
The old seals will come out HARD, and mine came out in several pieces (the old ones are a couple pieces in a "shell") but it is still a lot easier than tearing the insides apart.
Good Luck- Paul.

Yes, if you use a seal puller (I got one from a Sears Hardware store) they will come out. Not easily, but after a lot of effort they do come out. I replaced the seals on my "H", and so far so good. The only suggestion I would make is to make sure you get the seal in past the chamfer on the cover (when you get the old seal out it will be obvious). Be sure to clean up the brake drum and bands and you're back in business!

If you can find a seal puller that will pull the old seal from the outside, no problem. If not, it's a major job. You need to pull the transmission top cover, remove the axel & bull gear so you can remove the brakeshaft bearing housing. ken
