i recently aquired a farmall M tractor that belonged to my grandfather until he passed on in 99. Anyway i"ve got it running but i want to know how to check the hydrolic/rearend fluid and how do i add more if it"s needed? Any help is appriciated. And another thing is he claimed there was something special about the rear end and i noticed when i drove it that gears 1-4 all seem to be really close together and they are all really low...there is a speed change but it is not much, and then road gear (5) is like i remember. What could be special about it? any help is appriciated.

well i know the tractor has hydraulics because i witnessed them work when i was younger, but i can't seem to find the dip stick to check it...and my i remember that my grandpa told me that whatever it think is making the gears so low was after market and i beleived he called it a "Super M Kit" but i'm not completely sure.

The first 4 gears seem very close together to most I would assume.

Per the manual speeds are as follows for each gear: MPH forward 2-5/8, 3-1/2, 4-1/4, 5-1/8, 16-1/4 and 3-1/8 reverse.

The hydraulic oil and transmission oil are 2 different things as you might have gathered from Nebraska Cowman's post.

You can get a decent manual and service manual for about $20 or so online, if you plan on doing much work on it yourself it will be well worth it.

Make sure you lube all the grease fittings.

HTH, Nathan

Hydraulic fluid is a dipstick on the right side of the tractor under the gas tank, if your tractor has hydraulics.

Rear end lube is a pipe plug on the left side of the rear end in front of the axle housing. Drains front and rear in the center on the bottom. Fill through a big pipe plug on top next to the steering post.

You should look into getting a reproduction owner's manual for the tractor from a place like binderbooks DOT com.

Look at the serial number tag, there might be some letters ahead of the number. the letter A would indicate low speed gears.
