What's wrong with my H?

Yesterday, my 1941 H developed a new problem after pulling a 2 bottom plow for about an hour. It idles fine, but put any kind of load on it and it hesitates, sputters and usually dies. This also happens if you pull the throttle while it is sitting at idle. So far I have blown out the fuel filter, changed plugs, taken apart the carb and stared at it and generally fretted. What can this be?

Remove the fuel line at the carburetor and see if
you have a flow or just a drip. With just a drip there's blockage in the tank or in the sediment
bowl. Could be rust, dirt or both. Hal

Had the same problem on a C. Turned out to be the coil. It would get hot then had little spark. Changed it and that solved my problem.

I would ask what type of plugs are in it now? How old are they? And are the Champion?

Put in new Autolites

Pull the needle at the side bottom on the left of the carb. High speed adjustment needle. it should pour fuel out steadly. This will help clean out the bowl and tell you if the needle and seat is plugged. If it is pours out it is not plugged. If it does not trash has stopped up your seat and not letting enough fuel in to run a high rpm but enough to idle. Hope this helps.

i had a piece of rust about the size of a quarter floating in my gas tank and the tractor would run fine until that piece covered up the hole to the sediment bulb and then the tractor would have the same symptoms you are experiencing. but in my case when the tractor died the piece would float away so it took a awhile before i found my problem but once i did she's been fine ever since.

Had the same problem with my John Deere M. Turned out to be a lot of crud clogging the fuel line at the tank. Check the flow from your tank. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I had an "M" that would do the same thing. Found out that the tank was full of rust and would clog the inlet of the sediment bowl. Try examining your gas tank and check the inlet of the sediment bowl. Hope this helps!

I had an H years ago, when first using it for the day it would run ok, but after 30 to 45 minutes use, the engine would start loosing power,I would throttle down slower & slower till finally it would only run at idle. I would shut it down & let it sit for a while & start over the same again.Where the fuel line attaches to carburator, there is a fitting that screws into carb that had a fine screen to catch trash, it would pack full & shut fuel flo off.

Check that you have a good flow of gas from the tank, its pretty common to get rust or dirt blocking the outlet at the bottom of the tank. But you may as well give it a tune-up and clean the air filter if you haven't done either in a while.

It's likely that your carburetor picked up a piece of crud and is plugged somewhere. Clean it and put a kit in it. I have never used fuel filters. If your tank and sediment bowl are clean, you don't need one. If you must have a filter, simply replace it.

I had the same problem with my 140 until today except that the engine wouldn't sputter, it would just kill just like the key was turned off. I spent a good while trying to find an electrical problem that didn't exist until I found the inlet of the sediment bowl was clogged with dirt/rust. I was amazed at how long the engine would run at idle with just a drop of gas every other second or so coming from the tank!
