Maybe its an Ontario thing! The guy across the road never owned a car. When he got rid of his horses he used the tractor to go into town. He'd take a wagon along if he was buying a lot.
Did that till the day he died. You sort of lose a bit of the neighbourhood character when a guy like that goes.

When I was in College, I had a summer job in Wolf Lake, IN, and my co-worker and I were breaking up and removing old cement out of a granary with a *gasp* John Deere 4020. The boss and the other guy that worked with us took off with all the vehicles and left us with no means of getting to the local diner for coffee during break time. So we put that JD in road gear and drove up State Road 109 and US 33 and dropped the bucket right in front of Walker's Restaurant. We were feeding our faces with coffee and doughnuts when the boss walked in -- his bald head was red as a beet. He said simply, "come on, let's go guys". Needless to say, our next staff meeting was quite unpleasant. I'll bet he's still mad about that to this day, 15 years after the fact.

Just as a warning, check your state laws before driving the tractor on the road if you don't have a drivers lisence. Here in Nebraska, they had so much trouble with people with suspened lisences buying small tractors and driving them that the passed laws against it. A farmer who doesn't have a drivers lisence or a farm boy too young to get a drivers lisence can get a agriculture permit to drive tractor on road between farms, or to haul grain to elevator with tractor and wagon. I don't know all the details of the law, but I know you can get in as much trouble driving a tractor without a drivers lisence in Nebraska as you can with a car or pickup.

In Ontario, you have to be 16 in order to drive, legally, on the road with a tractor...

There was these two old brothers in a town not far from me. One could hear, the other could see. They made a seat wide enough for both of them sit on their garden tractor and they drove it everywhere, but only as a team!

We had an old fellow in the town I grew up in that drove his tractor everywhere. He was known as Tractor Ted. Think the state had taken his drivers license so that was how he got around. He had an H that he built his own cab for. Got him all over the place. He even drove it up the interstate the wrong way one night. That was the end of Tractor Teds tractoring around days! No accidents fortunately but sure could have been!!

I've driven to town for Ice cream before. My uncle made a beer run during our county fair a couple years ago-----at 3:45 AM with his straight piped H.

Three of my cousins once drove a tractor into town because their mother wasn't home to take them to their Little League baseball game, but that was back in the sixties...
