Carburetor Confusion on Farmall M, dist or gas?

I've been rebuilding the head on my M and, as part of that, I started rebuilding my carburetor. I was surprised to find that the carburetor bowl assembly is a:

6514 DA

and the throttle body assembly is an 8557

My parts manual says the 6514 carburetor bowl is a kerosene/
distillate carburetor bowl, not gasoline. And it does not mention the 8557 throttle body at all, referring only to the 8867. I double-checked the numbers till my eyes crossed.

Now I have assumed all along that my engine is a gasoline engine. It has only a single fuel tank, the manifold on it was a gasoline manifold, and the exhaust valves were equipped with rotator caps. I've run gasoline in the thing ever since I bought it.

My questions are:

1) What kind of FrankenCarburetor am I looking at and is it possible to rebuild it as a gasoline carb? If so, which kit do I get?

2) I've already ordered gasoline valve guides, gasoline intake valves, gasoline exhaust valves, etc. for the head and it's at the machine shop. Is there any chance that the engine was originally a distillate/kerosene engine and, if so, can the gasoline valve parts be used in the head without problem?

Thanks very much!

greg

Carb has probably run okay on gas for years. Engine serial # on block would have X1 following
number if origianaly gasoline.Front part of parts book should tell you where to find engine serial #.Hard to tell which head is on after all the years.Do what CNKS said look at casting # 8060
or 8574 gasoline.

I forgot the X1 on the chassis -- that is the easy way to tell--but, that needs to be verified by the part number -- hard telling who did what to that engine in 50-60 years.

Chassis number is long gone (tractor is a 1947 unit). Chassis plate is gone. Never had it.

You might find the serial number stamped on a flat spot on the block just above and forward of the distributor.

In my opinion, the answer is don't worry about the carb. My dad had a new gas only H with a distillate/kerosene carb. This was in 1948, I drove that tractor for probably 5000 hours. I did not know it wasn't a gas carb until I started reading this site 5-6 years ago. Checked my parts book and sure enough it wasn't the gas carb. The main difference in the carbs is the main jet. Regardless the dist/kero carb does fine on gas. But, as for your second question, you need to check the part number on the head to see which version you have -- I think you have to remove the valve cover to do that. Someone else can give you the part numbers of the different heads, as there were several. There were also chassis serial number differences, that may affect what you need.
