Neighbor has a 460 that won't release any gear position until the torque lever is pulled back ,then it will come out of gear as it should. Is this an external linkage adjustment problem or something more serious/

Adjust it like Hugh says. If that doesn’t fix it, then it could be the clutch. The 460 and 560 originally had a full circle fiber clutch disk. Many were switched out at one time or another to the Dyna-life button clutch which has a hard metallic buttons instead of the fiber. These were notorious for chewing up flywheels and pressure plates and when they did, a curved edge forms on the inside and outside diameter were noted to cause dragging on the clutch disk making it almost impossible to shift gears standing still unless you pulled the TA.

External adjustment, the short linkage between clutch shaft and TA shaft needs to be shortened a hair. Be careful don't go too far. These really should be adjusted by the book and to the letter, close is not good enough.

woflman: The IH operators manuals on 00, 50 and 60 series tractors gave very good description for clutch and TA settings. Good diagram. Actually that short linkage does nothing more than exactly what you folks are doing by pulling back TA lever. I found as these tractors got older, sometime you had to take an extra half turn shortening that short linkage to make it release right.

We did it. With Hugh's tips and the operator's manual this old Farmall is shifting like a new one. Thanks again for the good info. Wolfy.
