Sometimes when I shut my 300U down, right after the engine stops rotating,I can hear where the starter drive is snapping back.Like it was dragging the entire time the engine was running,or like it somehow engaged after the flywheel stopped. Is this normal? My old drive did it,and my new/rebuilt one does it.The new drive hasnt skipped a beat yet though, and has engaged every time I have turned the key.
It might not be the drive, but it sure seems as its coming from that area (between trans and engine). It only makes the click when the flywheel is nearly stopped.

My bet is the springs in the driven member of the clutch, then again maybe it has a soild member.

On the subject of 300 Utes Carleton Farm Supply has a pair or them, one was traded in from orginal owners son, a plain jane, no IPTO, no TA, no fasthitch and no powersteering. But real nice shape. 3500.

more likely something loose in your clutch. If the starter were staying engaged you should be able to hear a loud whirring as the starter would be turning realy fast.

As I always shut it down with the gear shift in Neutral and my foot off the clutch, the trans shaft would be turning too.It sorta sounds like something "dropping" into place upon the stoppage of rotation.Something like a tumbler on a safe clicking in,a gear engaging (falling into a slot).
Anyone else ever hear this sound on their machine? Ute or not?

Paul: Another item that could be noisy on 300s with IPTO is the PTO drive line. Two places this can rattle or click at low rpm or shut down are the seasonal disconect or spline going into presure plate. The IPTO drive is splined directly to the presure plate, thus where you have clutch will affect it very little.

A quick check on this is engage the PTO, then have someone turn PTO shaft enough to use any free travel. Unless the free travel is great don't worry much as they did this when new. Seasonal disconnects are now starting to become loose enough, we see a few breaking. This question has been asked at YT before, not recently though. My Farmall 300 was very close to being striped in the drive spline on a rebuild at 20 years. We had to install new shaft as well as presure plate.

Paul: If the tractor has provision for IPTO, the spline into presure plate and the seasonal disconect are in there. They are the part that will make a noise. They probably make more noise, not having the PTO unit as resistance.

This noise will be more pronounced when tractor is at low idle. Also when you shut tractor down, most 300 will give a backward kick on engine, thus any looseness in PTO drive line will click. Probably heard this 100,000 times in my lifetime.

Does the kickback depend upon whether or not the TA lever is ahead or back. Isn't it right that if the lever is ahead that there is no kickback, just a small clunk. And if the lever is back the engine is allowed to free wheel back a quarter turn or so and coast to a stop.

Donald: If the clutch and TA are properly adjusted it shouldn't make any difference whether TA lever is ahead or back. The short linkage between clutch shaft and TA shaft, is designed to release TA clutch as the main clutch releases. In essence that short linkage does exactly same as if you pull back on TA lever. Technically these tractors are never have TA in high when clutch pedal is depressed, if properly adjusted.

I would pull the clutch cover and have a look myself, if it was the starter you would know it.
