William: As Captain said if you change to detergent oil be ready to deal with the dirt you loosen up. I once did this with an engine I knew was dirty. In 4 days I changed the oil or I should say attempted. Removed the plug and nothing came out. Stuck my finger in the drain hole, and it felt like board. I removed the pan to find about 1" of sludge across bottom of pan. I cleaned the pan, changed the filter, put in new 15W-40 detergent oil. That was close to 20 years ago, and as of 4 years ago tractor was still going without a rebuild. The owner didn't use it a lot but when he did he worked it hard.

I personally think detergent oil is the best way to go. I've been using detergent oil now close to 35 years. I used to use 20 in winter and 30 in summer, now I use 15W-40 all the time.

A quality brand 10w30 should be just fine for you.

My personal recommendations:

Temps consistently over 55 F, and/or heavy continuous loads at temps over 20F: straight 30 W or 15-40.

Temps inconsistent but warmer than 20 F and medium loads or short term heavy loads straight 20 or 10-30.

Temps below 20 F and light to medium loads straight 10W or 5-W 30.

If your cooling system is working good, lighter oils won’t be a problem, but if your cooling system is working marginally, use heavier oil. If the engine has had a detergent oil in it, keep using detergent oil, but if it hasn’t try to find non-detergent oil or be prepared to change oil and filter as soon as the oil turns dark colored as the detergent oil will start “cleaning up” the engine and the garbage will end up in the oil and filter.

If you know your tractor has been using detergent oil, then 15-40 is a good choice, but if non detergent was used, then stick with 30w non detergent in the summer, and lighter in the winter
