Greetings
I asked this question on pulling discussion board,, but no response, I guess those guys don't want to give up any secrets.
I have a 15 year old son who would like to use my Farmall Super M for pulling in the FFA competion at the state fair, I have never pulled and would like to give him all the advice I can. I just rebuilt the engine with 4.125 step pistons, did a valve job, new bearings etc, the motor should be healthy.. where do I go from here,, BTW she has old Firestone tires and is a tricycle..
thanks in advance This is tractor I was looking for pistons for.. did it right instead

I just started pulling my '45 M this spring. I still need to get some things worked out, but I believe I have the weight balanced. I am pulling 6500 pounds. I have three wheel weights on each wheel, about 400 pounds on the back and I put 100 pounds up close to the front to keep the front end on the ground. It just barely picks the front up going down the track. Hey Chad, I just got my governor spring in the mail today. I guess that will be this weeks project along with the carb. kit.

I have pulled (and enjoyed success…) with my Super M at 5,500# and 6,500# in the farm stock class at local events over the past 10 years or so. Also my daughter in the “power puff” division – lady drivers only @ 5,500#. A few things we’ve learned:

1 – If you add weight to make a class, add it at the REAR of the tractor. Our experience is the SM loses traction before it lifts the front wheels or runs out of power. Ballasting at the front end gains us nothing.

2 – Don’t pull with a cold engine. If it’s not fully warmed up, let the motor idle so the temp gage is out of the “cold” band before you hook.

3 – Since you are running worn tires hope you get a hard track! We had our best success with worn tires on hard, dry tracks. After replacing with new Firestones several years ago we did best on wet/loose surfaces. If the track is loose, watch as other pullers go out ahead of you. If you observe soft spots try to avoid ‘em when it’s your turn.

4 – In the powder puff event, the drivers always seem more concerned with their looks than where they place. Hopefully that won’t be an issue for your son...

Have fun and good luck!

I have very limited experience myself but I have found that making the tractor as heavy as the class will allow is very important, and even more important is the proper distribution of that weight from front to rear and that is a real guessing game, it will be different from one track to the next.

Id say, if it is your first time, have fun, and be safe. Get a feel for what the tractor is going to do on the track. Expect the unexpected, front end being too light can overturn, and thats something you never wanna see. keep the front weighted down pretty well, till you get used to it. then get a little braver and let the front off the ground a bit more as time goes by. Super M's are great low gear pullers, lots more torque over a stock M so it will have pull if the carb is right. Pu on wheelie bars and practice this sport carefully, and have a ball! With your old Farmall! let us know how you did! Got all sorts of info on how to hop it up a bit more if it needs more power,, thats a different story at the moment for your tractor and experience. Hope this helps,, Chads

Been pulling since the late 50's I run a SM and 460 now, get a weight bar on back, middle and front, balance is the secret, front end should float, watch tire pressure and ask a lot of questions and look how other pullers are driving and where there weight is located get your draw-bar high and close to rear axel, make 1 change at a time and keep notes on how it worked.
