Has anyone experience cleaning gas tanks with muriatic acid and carb cleaners?
I have gone through over 3-gal of muriatic acid and a small bottle of carb cleaner and after every drain and rinse I still get black chunks, yellow fluid, and rusty floaters. How long should the acid sit inside? I have swished, swirled, and tumbled my M's tank for 4 hrs this past weekend and still doesn't look like enough time. When can I finally say that the tank is clean enough to proceed with coating it with a rust preventative sealer? Has anyone used carb cleaner in the same manner? Thank you all for your advice.

I would use lacquer thinner too and it will loosen up that varnish buildup. Since that tank has a baffle you may need to take it a radiator
shop and get their opinion as to whether they can
remove all that crud. They may be able to reline
the tank too. Hal

I used several links of chain of many sizes. I turned it for several hours. The tank was lilly clean in all areas I could see through the fill opening.

The solvent I used was lacquer thinner. I am not a fan of stong acid because it needs to be completely neutralized. Phosphoric acid is mild enough that it will work, but not need to be neutralized.

Did you put some nuts and bolts inside to help knock off the crud while you were swishing it around? Always use nuts and bolts so you can fish them out with a magnet.

I have not added any nuts or bolts, etc., to the gas tank to act as an internal abrasive. My tank has a baffold that separates the tank into two parts. Is this typical of an M's gas tank to have a baffold?

All Ms and Hs have the baffle. Do not use the nuts and bolts trick, they will get behind the baffle and be there forever. A chemical solution of some type is the only way to properly clean a gas tank. I have used muriatic acid with great success.

What was your technique?
I'd add a gallon, vigorously shake, tumble, swish and swirl, even let set for several hours, then drain and rinse with several gallons of tap water. Perhaps I am being a bit too hasty in my hopes of cleaning it all out f*a*s*t as it took nearly 50yrs to get that way in the first place.
Also, what's the recommended 'chaser' after the acid, i.e. neutralizer? Baking Soda and water?
