Hi folks, I have a few questions for you. I’m sorry if this is a bit long. I wrote a month ago about a Farmall M I bought at a farm auction. They question I asked was about a 8 volt battery in the 6 volt system (just to refresh your memory).

Well, I ended up having to tow it home by a chain with our van. I have been working on this off and on since. Changed the plugs, & cleaned out the oil bath filter and there was about 1 inch of mud…Yuck!

Cleaned out the glass gas bowl??? And alot of caked on gunk. Anyways, with a charged battery I can get the old girl to start up and it actually sounds pretty good for a minute or so then dies. Usually any further attempt just drains the battery. After 3-4 attempts that is all I can get out of her. It seams to me that the carb is filling up with gas, I start it up, the gas that is in the carb is used up and no more going in…and it dies, until the next day I start the process all over again. I pulled the carb and manifold (didn’t know I had to pull manifold to get the carb to come off) and fuel line. Fuel line seamed clear after blowing air through it (tasted nasty). The carb was gunked up on the outside but inside looked pretty good. I didn’t take the float off but I don’t think it has any gas in it. Does this all sound like it needs a rebuild kit or is it something else. Governor problems perhaps?
I haven’t done much work on any carb other than replacing a leaking float on a Chevy Luv before or much of anything else mechanical and greasy. Should I attempt it or take it to someone that has. Also, when I removed the manifold I see what looks like cracks between where all the bolts go. Are these supposed to be there or is it damaged. Other than that manifold is in great condition.
Again, I’m sorry to be so long winded, but wanted to make sure I could explain this in enough detail so you may imagine experiencing these problems as I am. Thanks, I look forward to here your expertise. Innkeeper…AKA, Don

Others have eluded to the fact that there is a fuel flow problem and have suggested many places to check. One that I have found particularly frustrating is when the neck of the sediment bowl that screws into the gas tank gets plugged with old dead flies or other gunk. You can blow back into the tank, but often the plug will settle right back in again. If it appears that this is where the restriction is, I’d suggest taking the tank off, tipping it on the side so that the fuel cap is up and unscrew the sediment bowl and take it out of the tank. Blow the holes out where the fuel runs through and then replace it. I’d also check the inside of the tank to make sure that there isn’t more crud in there to plug it up again.

I had this with my M when I bought it. Went through everything a few times --got new fuel lines, new sediment bowl, gas filter, CLEAN OUT THE GAS TANK! It comes off easily and you'd be surprised how much mud has likely accumulated in the bottom.

I like to take the drain plug out of thwe bottom of the carb (right under the load screw on an M) Let the bowl drain and then turn on the gas at the tank to check your flow. The is a screen where the line goes into the carb that could be plugged, also might be plugged in the flaot valve itself. You can take the bowl off the carb and see how it is doing. And just to let you know, you don't have to remove the manifold to get the carb off. just take the screws out that hook up the throttle shaft and wiggle it a little. The whole works will drop down.

How is the flow of fuel to the carb.Before rebuilding carbs good flow to the carb must be established.

I had that happen and it was a sticky float needle in the carb.

Check gas cap to make sure the hole in top is not plugged. It happened to me.

If there is mud int the air cleaner, and mud in the sediment bowl, there is probably mud in the bottm of the float bowl of the carb too, reducing the volume of fuel available fot the engine. On an unrelated note, you probably have an inch and a half to two inches of mud in your oil pan. Anything is possible. Definatly take a flashlight and look down into the fuel tank and make sure there is nothing blocking anything there. Good Luck...Randy

Innkeeper, the fact that is starts and runs fairly well, then dies out in a minute or so tells me(John andJLE) also, that there is aan interrupted fuel supply. When it sits the trickle of fuel fills the carb and then it will start for you. Disconnect the line from tank to carb and see what kind of flow there is..a stream about what you could pee should be coming out, anything less identifies where to start. When you remove your sediment bowl there is a screen up in there under the gasket, there is a good chance it is plugged full, or the actualconnection into the gas tank is full of corruption. I advise that you may blow air into the tank but the ebb of fuel back to the hole carries all the plugging guck back in with it and instantly plugs it. The filter at the carb is most suspect. There should be a drain cock on the carb(my old dual fuel M has one)and I can always tell by opening it, a poor stream of fuel=blockage...Good luck getting it fired up, its not a serious problem, but aggravating....Mike in Exeter Ontario

The filter refered to is the inlet screen at carb. where the fuel line connects. 5/8 wrench to remove, use box end or scoket, mite collapse it with open end. My bet is it is plugged!! The manifold has the cuts to allow expansion.
Used starter wrench and a very thin box end to remove, can't remember removing manifold to get carb. off

Are you sure gas is flowing from the tank to the carburetor? Loosen the gas line at the carburetor and see if you have a good stream of gas pouring out. If not there's blockage in the gas tank and needs to be clean. If there's a good stream of gas at the carb. inlet the float
valve in the carb. may be stuck closed preventing
gas to enter the carb, make sure the shutoff valve
is open and isn't blocked with dirt or rust too.

Those cracks that you have described on the intake
manifold may be not be sealing and causing a vacuum leak too. Hal

You have nailed your problem down to fuel related,and thats what I think it is also.Didi you clean the outlet in the tank where the dsediemnt bowl screws in at the bottom,and did you clean the screen in the bowl,if it had one.Also did you clean the filter on the carb? I have never had to pull a manifold to take off the carb,but have been temted a time oir two,those cracks you refer to,they shouldnt be at every bolt hole,what is it 2 or 4,but if you refering to what I think you are then yes they should be there.

As a novice to rebuilding an old tractor (49M), I too have little mechanical experience. But I ordered the tuneup video for M's from this site and it showed me how to rebuild the carb, cost 13$. Was very good video with one exception, it didn't show the screen filter being pulled and cleaned. So no gas to carb, with the advice from the guys on this site was a 10 min fix, running fine now. If your a rookie the video supplies alot of good info, points,plugs, carb rebuild and other basics. I have a book but I am one of those who learn best by watching.
