Warped Head on cub

Had the head checked at machine shop on cub and it was warped but showed no cracks when magged. Question is could this have been the problem for it not cranking and getting lots of water in the oil? The plugs had to be getting moisture on them while trying to crank over and the compression was low at 50 psi. Think I may try getting the head resurfaced and trying her again before a total engine removal and rebuild.(this looks to be fairly expensive) What is a range of a total rebuild cost of a cub?

A new cub head is $139 - 159. I put a "good" used head on my cub and it took two weeks to fill the oil sump to over flowing with water. Bubbles in the rad are a sure sign of trouble. A leaking head will allow your compression to escape. Put a new gasket and head (-<$200), she will still run for thirty years more. If you are so inclined do her all, they do not de-value.

You should check with your local machine shop for machining costs. The block may need to be bored
oversize for new pistons, valve job, crankshaft
may need to be ground undersize or polished.

One of the Cub owners that post on here said it cost $900.00 to put his engine in first class shape. I did a GM engine with a 4 cylinder engine and a broken ring scored the cylinder and
it cost me $600.00 for parts and machining and I assembled the engine and then they found the head cracked which was another $500.00 since I had to buy a new head. I found 6 used heads and they were cracked too. Hal

Yes a warped head could let the head gasket leak water into the combustion chamber causing all those problems. As long as the head is off, what do you see? Is there a pronounced ridge at the top of the cylinder? How do the cylinders look? Glassy smooth, or scored and discolored? Borrow a bore gauge and check to see how out of round the cylinders are. Any burned or bad valves? It's easier to look at some of these things now that the head is off to see if anything else needs attention.
As far as cost, I don't know. However, if it needs it, do it. It's worth it. You'll be glad you did every time you start it and it runs great. You may be able to get by with just fixing that head though.
