I tend small acreage some soybeans and little wheat every so often for rotation purposes 50 acres or less. Can one still find pull behind combines something like an Allis all-crop or other models. Are they hard to come by and how is the parts availability. Usually custom but would harvest myself if could locate good unit. Thanks.

One can work land or plow or plant with an H and equally aged equipment just fine, but when it comes to harvesting, that's another matter. Yes, I realize that they used those machines fifty years ago and they worked fine. Unless you are doing it strictly for fun, it will be an exercise in frustration. Old combines didn't have the ability to chuff the occasional weed through without blocking up. When it does block up, there's no reverser; it's 45 minutes of peeling feed out of the cylinder. With soybeans, you really do need a flex head. If you just try to use a rigid platform and watch it closly, you will get mud balls the shape of soybeans in the grain tank. Usually you can pay for custom harvest with the amount of grain you would lose with an old machine without a flex head, and maybe not as efficient as it used to be, maybe a few leaks in the tin, maybe the settings aren't just right, etc. If you want to do it for fun, go for it. Just be aware that you may be making up new words before long. I've been down that road. I hated to pay $25/acre for custom and figured that for my few acres I could make it work. It was a good machine, too. However, there's a reason that a 25 yr old combine sells for peanuts, but a 25 yr old tractor is just getting started.
Sorry so long!
Paul

I have a 91 mccormick self propelled combine, all original, great shape, everything works. I got it for $700. There was an auction a couple weeks ago that had a mccormick pull type 80. It was mint, good paint everthing worked awsome, it went for $200, I wasen't at that auction though. This is in Ontario CANADA. So ya they are still out there.

Yes, they are out there. I see 2-3 a year. Mostly in the $500 and down range. AS far as parts, depends on the brand and model.

I used to have one that I used for these kinds of crops and grass seed. Were I doing it again I'd probably try for an older, small, self propelled unit. Still under $1000 and a lot faster, less dust on me.
