I converted our SH last summer and used the Nippondenso. It's a tight fit but the hood does close. If I were doing it again I think I'd try the Hitachi as suggested below and try and get a little more clearance.

Cutting the hood is an offense punishable by death. Please take the advice of the knowledgeable gents below.

I used a Hitachi 14231 on my H, and my dad's M has a standard Delco one-wire alternator. It was a minimal effort to get them to fit under the hood in both cases.

Please please please do not cut the hood.

It takes a lot of fitting and re-fitting ,but it can be done with out cutting the hood.My "M"is getting the GM alt....I am going to leave the "H" 6v for now...

The idler pulley mentioned below is an easy fix. I just did one this way last week.

the delco cs series is slightly smaller than a 10si, and is just as simple to hook up...think 90s+ GM applications. down side is the early enclosed series (cs120?) have overheating failure problems, and the newer open ones (cs130)would probably let too much chaff and what ever inside. to wire one you use the hot lead to the battery, then wire a warning lamp to the L terminal...if my memory serves right. sensing is internal to the alternator already.

hope this helps -karl f.

Haveing the same problem with a 300U and had that problem on a 450, I ended up useing an alternator from a toyota pickup and it worked well going to do the smae on the 300U. Price at O'reallys is $85 for a life time warranty one and its small and will fit under the hood. Try one for say a 1989 toy

used a standard GM on several H's. added a idler pulley so that the alt could be pushed in as far as possible and belt adjusted correctly. simply put a pulley (bought an idler pulley fro a lawnmower deck) on a arm and fastened the arm under the alt. hood does not touch and belt always stays tight.

The Hitachi #14231 alternator is the smallest one that I have been able to find. NAPA part #2138130 cost $49.95 plus core. It was used on a 1978-79 Nissan 620 pickup and a 1980 Nissan 720 pickup both with a 2 liter engine. It is 4 1/2" in Dia and 7" in length. I use it all the time and don't have to cut any hoods.

Hope this helps

Bill, I converted my 1951 H to 12 volt last fall using a Hitachi No. 14231 alternator. The NAPA part no. is 2138130 and cost was about $50 plus a core for a new rebuilt. I believe the automotive useage for the alternator is for 1978-1980 Nissan 620 or 720 pickup trucks with a 2 liter engine. It fits fine between the valve cover and the hood and it is about an inch smaller in diameter then the common Delco 10-SI. I turned the original H generator bracket upside down and was able to use the existing generator belt so didn't have to play with the pulleys to put on a new belt. By turning the bracket upside down it moves the alternator up about an inch where you have plenty of space. I ended up with about a 1/4" between the alternator and the side of the hood. I have some additional information I can pass along if needed - my email is open. Mine turned out great and cutting a beautiful and old original Farmall hood is out of the question.
Hal

I don"t know what kind of alternator you are trying to fit but there is good information in the archives of this site. One of the excellent articles by one of the regulars, Bob M, is located here:>Link

I think the Nippendenso (sp) alternator fits pretty good under there. Somebody with more knowledge than me will probably tell you for sure. Whatever you do, please don't cut the hood. They're getting harder to find all the time. Larry
