Need some advice/Help 1964 806 Gas: I've had the tractor 5-6 years. The Ta has always been unwilling to go into high till I run the engine up to 2000-2500 rpm then it would shift suddenly, after that, it would work fine all day long. it has never slipped, always a crisp shift into high range. I pull a 5 bottom plow and a 14' disk.
The brakes and steering have always worked fine.
the oil and filter have been changed. the light works properly altho it will glow when it is put into high range and it hasen't "kicked in" for the first time, indicating low pressure.
New problem: several times today while working it, when I dropped it down into low range(pulled TA) it kinda went into a "netural" then "bang" it was in low range. I'm thinking possibly I have a MCV problem rather than a ta problem?????
or do I have a seal problem in the ta clutch apply package??? that is progressivly getting worse?? any ideas from the experts???
I really don't want to split her and replace the TA and not need to, or worse, not solve the problem! that is alot of work for an ol'Boy like me.
Thanks in advance,
ol'George

First thing to check is that the spool valve is going all the way down to the snap ring and then all the way up . Next is to check the clutch pressure regulator spring and make a pressure test and see what you have for lock up pressure i like them at a round 265 to 285 . And if this all checks out ok then it is time for the big one . Stock lock up pressure will be down around 210 to 220 just off the top on my head, and that would be ok but i like it up a bit that way i know that they won't slip up to over 250 hp. Also check the spool for any binding it should float free in the bore. And be careful when removing it as it has spring pressure behind the plug.

First, thanks for the reply!! ok, the spool is going full travel but the last 1/8- 1/4" from down to snap ring, it hesitates or slows, then completes it movement,as if to "cushion" the shift???? While operating,I don't just throw the lever foreward, I hesitate halfway for a split second as the oper. manual says, to allow a crisp shift, but not a "bang" shift.

Where do I check pressure,----- at the pressure switch?

The service man. makes no mention of a pressure check "tap" Looking at the diagram, it appears that the ta has 2 clutch packs, one to select hi and one to select low. with an overrunning clutch/sprag unit, simular to automatic transmissions in car/trucks. This leads me to think that worn clutch packs would slip --- whereas low pressure, leaks, mcv spools would cause this thing to have "morning sickness" got me stumped!! again, thanks for the replys

Well as for your shifting tec. forget the gental shift that is the old way today we go from hi to low fast and when up shifting from low to high don't linger in the middel this causes slipage . you check pressure on the vary bottom of the MCV and you will need to get a fitting that is the same as the plug and a gauge that will read atleast 600 lbs. . The pressure reg. is the top plug closest to the clutch pedal.. Just where do you live. Give me a call as i am home and will be up till about 10:30 ohio time Phone no. is 330-337-8113.

No sorry sprag clutch or in the TA is is out. Yes to fix it you will have to split it. One thing to remember even if you had no oil in the transmission it would move in TA because it is a one way lock up bearing. Yes there is a clutch pkg for ta it is so it does not coast in TA it will not pull the tractor.

Boy, I dunno George,

Kinda sounds like you have a new problem of a slippin' sprague added to the original oil problem.

Maybe ol' Tractorvet will jump in here. He knows these things inside and out.

Allan
