Thanks everybody for all your help. I took the head back off the 706 last night to have it milled. The head gasket was only on there 1 day, do i need to replace it? It's a fel-pro brand

head gaskets can be reused on the same setup if you use Hylomar racing formula sealer. A stock car builder told me this. Its a common practice for him to reuse head gaskets.

I would advise getting a new head gasket. You are having the head milled, thus you are changing the contour of the mating surfaces of the head and gasket. There may be areas where the head was high and put more pressure on the gasket causing it to squash thinner in some areas than in others. Reinstalling it with a truly flat head may cause these areas to not have adequate pressure on them, resulting in a failure.

When others say that they hare reused gaskets, I presume that they just pulled and replaced the head without doing any machining to the head or block. I too have done this on older engines (my 22-36 for example) where the compression ratio is low. I usually soak them overnight in water, and then apply gun grease (as someone else suggested) to the surfaces before reinstalling. Works fine most of the time but I’m not sure I’d risk it on a 706 that I was depending on using a lot.

It is scrap now go and get a new one and make it a victor gskt they seam to be alot better then the Fel-Pro.The one i just put on the 706 that ate a piston sealed the first time . with only a lite coat of copper coat. and a retoqure . The newer 6 cyl. are a higher comp. then the older tractors and run at a much higher rpm . Also make yourself up 2 studs from a couple of old 1/2 x4 1/2 bolts cut the heads off and cut in a screwdrive slot in them so you can remove them after you get the head on this helps with alignen the head so you are not sliding the head around on the gskt. to find the bolt holes. Make sure that you have it up to operating temp. then retoqure and reset the valves . Before you put the head on i like to use some 180 emery to make sur that the block is clean and wipe down with laqure thinner also run a tap down each head bolt hole to chase the threads and clean with either or brake clean and blow dry clean the bolts up with a wire bruch on a grinder or run a thread chaser over them clean and dry and then a littel white greaseor a light coat of oil this was you will get a better toqure also lube the washer .

i wouldn"t put any lube on the threads as the specs are for a dry bolt not lubed could actually put to much torque on it

I have had occasion to take a head off again after I had torqued it down and have used the head gasket again without any problems (Mostly on 1930s F-Series tractors with relatively low comprssion ratios) I always use an old technique (or trick) I learned from my Father. I grease the gaskets (Head and otherwise) with "Gun" grease before I install them.

we have reused them many times,, you can paint them as sloroll said, I use black permatex (aviation) and have never had one leak ,if it isnt blown out they usually hold, most old tractors are not high pressure systems,,,Jim

I have reused head gaskets with good results. I painted them with silver paint first. Of course a head gasket isn't that expensive when you figure the cost of tearing the head back off if it doesn't seal. The choice is yours.

It all depends on whether you want to do the job right or not.
Once a head gasket has been torqued down, I would not reuse it. You'll save a few dollars, but waste the time you spent removing and replacing the head.
