Has anyone bought any of the new starters listed on Ebay? They look like a good deal and quite a bit cheaper than the IH dealer. Whats your opinion.

Thanks,

Mark

I bought a starter for my Farmall A from 'dbelectrical' on ebay. It is a brand new Delco Remy starter... paid around $100 for it.

It kicks over nicely. The problems I am having is that the return spring doesn't seem strong enough, and every once in a while you can hear the teeth making contact with the running engine. I have also had the starter lock up tight to the motor before and not release without rolling the engine backwards... though this may be in my setup--though I don't know how one would adjust it on this style starter.

As for the tooth chatter, the old one never seemed to do it however the corners of the bendix were all chewed off so maybe it did in the past... that is what lead to its problems (not meshing) that I replaced it for.

For the price, I'm sure not complaining. Mine is a working tractor/forklift so if it makes a little extra noise I don't care, as long as it lasts a few years...

Unless someone has a solution to my problem? ;)

My starter was also from DB electrical and the bendix return spring seemed weak as well and the gear was getting hung up on the ring gear...we figured we had to compensate for warped ring gear and new and old parts not always lining up so we shimmed the starter out a little bit and it doesn't hang up anymore.

I'm just curious what you used for shims... its not quite as simple as a small-block Chevy...!

I bought a new starter for my Farmall m off of ebay. It works good so far. . .I have only started it about 4 times since I put it on there and I haven't had any problems. It turns over real strong. The only problem now is getting the fuel lines and tank cleaned out so the old M will stay running.
