I have the chance to buy an iron tooth drag. Essentially, it is two old horse drawn drags combined into a single one that is hooked up to a fast hitch. I have a feeling that I could use it but I was wondering if anyone out there uses one and for what. I am thinking it might be nice to use after broadcasting disking seeds (or after fertilizer/lime) onto the pasture since it has more teeth than using a harrow and I can cover more ground getting seed to soil contact but this is my un-informed opinion. I already have a disk harrow so do I really need this? Thanks Ramon

In Iowa they call them a spike-tooth harrow too. We pull them behind a disk sometimes to help level and break up clods. You do need to have the tines pointed back, not forward, and yes they will drag every stick stalk and piece of trash around if not angled correctly. They are also very good (had a 4 section unit) at puncturing tires if the hired man parks it in the weeds with the outer sections folded over (ie: upside down with spikes up) on the inner sections. You woldn't believe how fast the air comes out of tires with 4 or 5 1" holes.....

We always called them spike tooth harrows and they did a good job of covering seed and leveling
the soil. Hal

Pull the handles all the way forward and the teeth will then "trail" to the rear rather than digging in.

Here in cattle country we use four or five of those in a row behind a large iron I-beam and drag our hay meadows in the spring after feeding on them in the winter. Breaks up the cowchips for fertilizer and smooths out the gopher mounds.

Out here in Colorado we called these harrows and we always pulled them with the teeth pointed back. They are good for finish tilling and seed coverage. I've used them behind a team of horses as well as a Farmall A & H.

when we had our vegetable truck garden we used one behind our 8n ford to help break down the soil for planting the gardens and also for covering up oats and hay seed we spread out each year with a seeder cart.

If in the picture, it is hooked to the tractor you don`t want to use it that way. You want the teeth to face the rear of the drag. Or the oposite of the way they are in the picture. The way they are in the picture they will dig every thing up. When facing back wards they will cover seed better and level the ground much better. It is a nice piece of equipment to have. Boyd

I like them, they way they are pictured, for harrowing my driveway. It keeps the rocks on top and the trash/dirt blown away or settled.

It will also be good for dragging up every corn stalk, bean stalk, stick and weed into a large pile at the end of the field...or even middle of field..Cmore

We always used one of those after seeding with a grain drill. Others use them after broadcast seeding. It will definately help cover the seeds and will also smooth and level the ground making it much nicer to drive on when taking off a hay crop. That drag harrow can also be used on your pasture about once a year or so to help loosen the soil and sort of rejuvenate the grass. Buy it, you will find many uses for it.
