M needs heavy choke

I have an M which has always behaved very well (outside of burning a little oil). It would always start on the first or second crank, and run smoothly after that.

Last year, it spent a good deal of time idle (from July04-March-05) while I waited for a new manifold.

Now that I have it running again, it does not behave the same way. It still starts easily, but it needs *almost* full choke to stay running. When asked to work a load, it coughs and sputters and is difficult to keep running.

I thought it was the carb, so I took it off and cleaned it thoroughly... probably hasn"t been so clean in 30 years! But... it still does not behave. Is this a govenor problem?

You have a fuel starvation problem not a governor problem.

Did you put on a new or used manifold? Your problem could be a leaky gasket or a crack in the intake part of the manifold. It could also be a gummed up passageway in the carburetor or a plugged sediment bowl or screen.

Try some of the suggestions (unlit propane torch or carburetor cleaner) and check the manifold and gaskets for leaks. If that doesn’t show anything, check fuel flow to the carburetor and lastly go after adjustments on the carburetor.

Have you opened the main jet adjusting screw? Turn this screw one full turn CCW and see if that improves the power without being choked. From the
picture in my IH manual shows the screw with a screwdriver slot. Hal

And it's got a new manifold? It sure sounds like there's a leak around the intake somewhere. Maybe the gasket isn't sealing quite right? I've heard that an unlit propane torch passed around the intake manifold while the engine is running will detect the leak. Just listen for the engine to change sounds.

Propane cutting torch (unlite)will work or a can of carb cleaner. Spray/blow it aroung the gasket areas and listen to the engine.

Mine did the same thing and I found out the manifold was leaking at the gasket between it and the carb.
