I want to pick your guy's brains. Anybody own an IH 66 series hydro? I got to thinking that i knew that they made them but I rarely see them. What part of the country are they more popular in? I live in the dairy region of the US and you would think that would be prime area for chopping and what not.

Just want to hear y'all respond. Thanks.

I have a hydro and love it. Maint and proper adjustments are the key to good oper. I am trying to stay away from heavy tillage with it as that is hard on them. Looking for a good 75-80 hp tractors with cab for the tilling work. , just so it last 40 years. If ya watch the ads in central MN rural papers ya do see them quite often.

They only built the 666, 966, and 1066 Hydro for a year, '71-'72, I think. Replaced them with the 70 Hydro and 100 Hydro.

bought a 1971 966 hydro off a neighbor when I started farming his ground years ago, (didn't want his 1026 hydro), a good friend had a 1066 hydro, I wouldn't mind finding one in the future for my operation. David

Hi Dave,

The local 'Red Shop' had one of those 966 hydros in a couple of months ago. I just plain fell in love with that old rascal.

Talk about a 'beefy' lookin' tractor! :>)

Morning Allan, yeah I know the one we bought was probly the only one in Indiana that hadn't had the hydro worked on and the funny thing the first owner hadn't changed the filters (trans & hydro) for 20 years so go figure. David

Hi, I am from northeast Iowa and there are a lot of them around here. I have a 1066 Hydro. It is a earley 1973. I've been told they were discontinued in mid 73 and started 100 hydro.
I have a love hate relation ship it. For the loader and snow blower it's perfect. In the field it's a big joke. I have a 806 that will run circles around it. The 806 has 9000 hrs on it with a turbo on it all it's life and never had the head or pan off. The 1066 has 4200 hrs. on now, was over hauled 500 hrs. ago.

I know of a few here in central MN. Some are on dairy farms, turkey farms, hobby farms, one of the road constructions companies I think has one. A lot of uses seem to be for chopping, bailing, pulling a packer, running a brush cutter, feeding, loader tractor, and such. Seem to be a good tractor with a diesel engine in front of it and oil maintenance taken care of on a regular basis. Hydo's need clean oil and oil coolers kept clean to make them last.
