Hello everyone,

i recently purchased an M farmall here in Texas, with power steering,it is a 1949 model "MCH" what does that mean? i havn't cleaned her up yet,and i havn't "researched" for info here yet,cuz i wanna know "now" but is power steering on an M Farmall factory? and if so then it's gotta b rare right? i mean it sure looks professional and it is quite hidden under the hood, fits nicely, and works well, although leaks, that i will repair once i pressure wash the ole girl, anyway i have a model H also and i sure like that one as well, but this M is the first one i've seen with power steering

and not that i wish to sell it,but how much more is it worth cuz of the power steering? the tin work is nice, one new tire on rear (goodyear) and other one weather checked, fronts bad,but hold air,and it runs well
thanks guys, i sure like this forum

Okay i gotta tell ya more, cuz i would want to know too.i mean don't ya just hate it when someone posts that they got a bargain? and then they don't say how much they paid for it? i mean i for one always wanna know! so i'm telli'n> the engine was "stuck" a little, and it broke loose very easily, all i had to do was file points with emory cloth, and clean the carb,it started right up after that, but since then i did have the starter repaired, i give the guy $450.00 for it.. oh and it came with a five foot bush hog too.

Will,
What part of Texas are you in? I recently drug home an M cotton picker, and it has power steering. It has a reversible tranny top and reversed differential. The power steering could have been part of the cotton picker, along with the tranny top. Mine is a Char-Lyn also, and the pump mounts to the governor and looks factory. Email me and I can send some photos. I would like to see photos of yours.

There was a Cotton Harvester tractor made. It should have an X20 suffix on the end of the serial number. That would mean it came from the factory with High Drum axles and 20" front wheel. If your axle housing ends are flanged, then it originally had the high cotton axles and was converted back to a standard tractor. Mine is a low cotton tractor, hence it has the reversible top and not the special axles. You get one or the other, not both. When you add both, you get a High Crop MV wanna-be.

Will - How much is Charlynn PS worth? Do like Allen suggests – remove the pump belt and run the tractor without PS for a day....then YOU decide it’s “value”!

Seriously, used Charlynn motors run $200 - $250+. New they are close to $500 last time I checked. Then you gotta add cost of the pump and installation.

Regarding the steering motor leak, try tightening all the screws that hold the motor halves together. (You need a 12 point socket, 5/16”(?) for this.) Also tighten the two allen head screws that hold the hose manifold to the motor body. These often work loose and cause the manifold to leak. There’s also a pair of O-rings that seal the manifold to the body that can fail and leak – replace them if necessary.

You got good deal on your M!

If I remember correctly MCH means tractor was cotton harvester at one time.Do the axle housings
have a flange with bolt holes on end toward wheels?

Power steering on an M was never offered from the factory, but a lot of Ms and Hs did recieve power steering as an aftermarket add-on. The two most popular brands of power steering was the Char-lyn and the Behlen. It sounds like what you are describing is the Char-lyn. It looks profesional because it was engineered and designed to fit that tractor. Power steering was one of the best add-ons a person could do.

The power steering add-on has been a part of so many of these old Farmalls that by now it should probably be considered a "factory option" that IH just didn't think of in time to put into production. Even with the addition of the power steering, I would still consider your M to be 100% stock, well, at least 99%. Leave it on there. You will not regret it.

Okay Will,

Here's what ya do. Take the power steering belt off and use the tractor for 'bout an hour.

All of that "I'm kind of a stock guy" thinking should disappear.

I used to think the same way until these guys showed me the light. I'll never again own a tractor without the steering. :>)

Good buy, by the way,

Allan
