Friend of mine has a 1955 400 LP cotten picker that has been returned to regular tractor status. It has flanges on the axles and a single front wheel. It has three forward gears and one reverse without a TA. Been a long time since I"ve seen a three speed tractor. Does an excellent job at our stock antque tractor pulls. I was wondering if anyone has any info on MPH for all three forward gears. I suspect that this came from a special order fleet cotten pickers.
Thanks for any comments.

ahhh the memories...
Bundling up like Nanook of the Northwest, spending 3 hours repairing what was broke yesterday, another hour greasing, one more hour warming up and hoping the wind doesn"t blow too hard which would cause the cotton to blow away while dumping the basket or worse, causing enough static electricity to build up causing a cotton fire. Half an hour to start the ole girl and get "er warmed up. Running south with a 3 mph wind blowing out of the north with a cloud of dust hanging all around, going back north into the wind freezing your hangy down thingies. The gears clanking, belts screaming and 400 acres more to go before December in this POS 2 row man killin machine.

Yup, I miss it alot.

Dad had a 400, tricycle, 2 row with basket on top cotton stripper, as opposed to a picker. Big difference. It had 5 gears and it ran like a top for many years. Stripped a Zillion acres before dad retired

I've never heard of only 3 forward speeds. All 400's should have 5 speeds, regular, cotton picker, high clear, LPG, didsel or whatever. Something must be torn up or it has been modified. It was definitely 5 speeds forward from the factory.

Maybe 4th and 5th were disabled for cotton picker use. No way would want to get a cotton picker mounted on a 400 going in 5th down the highway.

I have a 214A 2-row cotton picker, and the manual says the top speed is (I think) 16 mph in third gear. Pretty fast for being that high off the road.

Cotton pickers had a good road speed. Usually our two row pickers were shipped by rail from the factory which was just north of Memphis. Sometime we would drive new pickers from the factory to just accross the Mississippi line and load them on our cotton picker trailers, our dealership had two, to haul them to Greenville as we couldn't haul them through Memphis in Tennessee. We did this several times when we needed new pickers right then and didn't have time to wait on the railroad which took several days. Like any other high center of gravety machine you just had to be careful, but the road speed on both one and two row pickers was about the same as a tractor.

None were ever disabled that I have ever seen. All had all gears available.
