'48 Cub, professional overhaul, reported minimum 75# compression on each cyl. Runs like a sewing machine after pull starting, BUT, won't start with 6 volt starter OR 12 volt jumper OR crank. Sounds like the mag is clicking when I crank it. Its driving me buggy!

Yes you are going to have to check for spark at hand cranking like hal said. Or take the coil wire out of the dist cap and hold it about 1/4 to 1/2 away from termanel on the side and have someone crank it over for you you can take the plugs out to make it eiser to crank. See what you have , Color of spark how much arc. Try a tune up make sure the impulse snaps for every mark on the cap and not skiping a trip. You will have to take it off to do points and such no room on a cub. If you need more help or a rebuilt or yopurs rebuilt just let me know by asking for magman on here. THANKS MAGMAN

Are you sure when the rotor is on tdc that it is lined up with the terminal on the cap. The gear mite not be in correct timing. This can happen engine will start and run great when pulling but starter wont turn it fast enough to start. Had one like that just other day wouldnt start with starter but would start when pulling. Cause rotor didnt line up with tower on cap. Moved gear one tooth and it starts like a dream.

I agree with Hal, it sounds like weak spark

You should check to see if that impulse coupling
is working when you hand crank the engine. When
you are hand cranking have someone check for spark at the plug by holding the plug wire 1/4"
away from plug. Check the point gap for .013"
I think this is probably ok since it will start by towing. The MagMan rebuilds magnetos and he will probably have some more suggestions. Hal
