r4etired and IHCarl66 are both right. You'll need to drain the rear end and transmission and then take the deck/cover off. It could be a few teeth off the constant mesh gear, so that you have just two gears to replace, or the counterhaft could be sheared, or, or, or...
Whatever it is, you're up for an adventure, but I'll bet it's not more than few hundred bucks at most. Keep us posted, and good luck.

Sounds like a broken constant mesh gear to me.

A axle bearing went into the bull & pinion gears
it dissentigrated into several small pieces and
layed in the bottom of the rear end for years. Then one cold snowy Illinois morning I started the M the thick oil picked up a small piece of bearing and carried it through the input gear in the trans the piece got wedged in between teeth on gear every time you let clutch out it sounded like you were grinding corn inside trans. I took the top plate off drained oil and found problem in 2 min. I removed piece from teeth noise stopped however it ruined the bearings on input shaft and the expensive needle bearing inside shaft. I ended up replacing bull&pinon gears, bearings then seals in rearend and trans.
All bearings and seals were available at Peoria Bearing, and other bearing distibutors in area they were about half the price of dealer and everything was on the shelf in stock. good luck Carl

The fastest way to see what happened is to pull the plate over the trans&rear end. I would drain rear end and see how much metal or ball bearing material is in oil and rear end. If you heard clanking then a ball bearing might have went through gears in trans.I had this same thing happen on M
