In converting over my M's charging/electrical system I would like to know how to tell if the current ignition coil is a 12v or 6v. Using an ohmmeter what should the values be? I, too, would like to know the diode part number or electrical characteristics for installing one between the ignition switch and #1 plug on alternator.

6 Volt coil primary resistance is 1.5 Ohms, or a little more.

A 12 Volt coil needing NO external resistance runs 3 Ohms, give or take a bit.
