I was pulling old fence out of the ditch tonight and noticed when I got back on my 39 H that there is a number 6884D stamped on the transmission housing just below my right foot. Does anyone know what that number is for? I looked around the right side of the tractor and there are several other numbers stamped on the tractor. I had never noticed those before. Are those part numbers?

The "R" system replaced the "D" system, you won't find any R series numbers on your 39 unless they are later replacements. Of the parts still in production, your cover is not one of them, some have remained D numbers, some were changed to R numbers, some were changed to another system.

The numbers you see are the "D" series numbers, as I remember they were casting, part numbers..On other small parts and on equipment pieces you will see a number like this "36547829 R1" this is referd to as a "R" number.....

I worked for a short time for "IHC" back in '54-'55-'56 in Cincinnati, Ohio....

I've seen (in the parts books)those short numbers on replacement parts like water pump packing and other small replacement items (bolts/nuts etc).
