I was answering a question for Ironhorse on the Implement alley board the other day. Today it was raining so I went up in the barn to check my old drill. One run control was siezed and some oil and a hammer got it moving. I put the crank on the fertilizer runs and turned it over as I oiled the moving parts. I spun the grain runs as well and oiled them, oiled chains etc. I think I could sow grain with it right now but I didn't check the discs to see if any of them were siezed, that was a common occurence on double disc drills. I did look it over trying to find a serial plate , but no luck. This is what Ironhorse was wondering too. Any ideas? ....Mike in Exeter Ontario

Mike: My drill was a number 10 IH and it did have a serial number tag. Put on with 4 rivits much same as tractors. As I remember it was much smaller. You check around the front cross frame, I can remember being able to see the tag from tractor seat.

Can't tell you about the #10, but the "M" drill, late 40's early 50's, does not have a serial # plate. It could have been stenciled on but the paint on mine isn't very good.

On the same subject. Was at a customers today and beside his barn is an old horse drawn planter of some sorts. It has a seat at the back, is 2 row,has neat foot operated scappers for cleaning the steel wheels and looks to be pretty much complete and doesn't appear to be in that bad of shape.I could only see IH stamped on a piece of the frame. Hate to see it rust away so I will have to see if he will sell it. One mans junk is anothers treasure,,,,, ,,,,, ,,,,

I wastoo young to remember uch, but dad had an old 2 row IH horse planter, and I was about 4 , and riding on the seat. Got my right foot (with cowboy boot) into the drive chain and twisted my ankle real good. Crawled around for a couple of weeks.

Can see how that would happen, feet are real close to all the moving parts, a person would have to be careful.
