Steering U-joint

Got a question. The steering u-joint on my 1940 H is totally worn out, it is the old style, so, according to the parts man at case-ih, a replacement cross is not available. I have a complete u-joint that I picked up at a swap meet, and it was removed from an H. The problem I have is that the replacement does not have a slot for a key, but instead would require that I drill a 5/16 hole through both of the steering shafts, Do I want to use roll pins or bolts to secure the u-joint to the shafts? If bolts, what grade?

One word of advice. Use caution if you plan to use a bolt. Friend was driving his H in 5th gear down the road and the nut came loose bolt fell out and wheel went sideways. Luckily there was no ditch and the tractor didnt flip but it was one scary ride for him. Double nut or lock it on good. Take care and be careful.

Another option would be to take the new joint to a machine shop and they can run a keyway broach through it to create a keyway of the appropriate size. It's not a terribly complicated process, so it shouldn't cost big $.

I got the correct cross from Joes Farmall a couple of years ago. If you call be sure to tell him it's the old style and you just need the cross, not he whole joint.

Seems to me i got a u-joint from my dealer, but i can"t find invoice with part number. Grade 5 should be sufficient to secure that yoke. Use NF threads and a lock nut torqued to specs. My opinion,Mike

I have used several aftermarket U joints, I use 5/16 roll pins with a smaller size pounded inside the 5/16. personally trust them more than bolts. They fit tighter than any bolt will so you get the original play that starts the wear
