I read the archives and the consensus is that Hytran is the way to go on replacement hydraulic fluid for a Farmall 656D. I'm going to the CaseIH dealer to get a load.

Someone mentioned in the archives that the TA will not function with regular gear oil - anyone know why? The reason I ask is because I have TA problems and the fluids have some water contamination.....I guess I'm dreaming that somehow the fluid change is going to make my TA function and I am going to get out of a split ;-)

No harm in dreaming....

Tip,

If you have heavy gear oil in a sprag type TA, the rollers will not drop in the slot and lock up like they should especially in cold weather.

Changing to Hy-Tran will make a big difference, I'd suggest "rinsing" out your rear end with some diesel fuel to get the gear oil all out.

In my situation,I think that the old, worn out lubricant (oil of some sort) gummed up the TA in winter (made the rollers sticky?)and it slipped. Now that things warmed up,it works perfectly,in every gear,in every situation.Once I refill with HY TRAN I expect it to work all the time.
