OT- High miles on F350 Powerstroke

I am looking to buy a 1997 F350 dually with 7.3 Powerstroke diesel. It has 300,000 miles, was used to deliver trailers for a manufacturer so are 95% highway miles. Runs very well, new transmission (auto) last year.

I have a 1989 F350 with 460 gas and 150k+ and no problems, and had a friend with a 1989 F350 diesel that went 400k (he delivered trailers too) before an overhaul.

I just want to use this around the farm to haul my "H" and "560" on my gooseneck (here"s my tractor connection for the YT site), haul the wife"s horses, and transfer cows between pastures. No long-distance moves, etc... maybe 10k miles per year.

Am I stupid for even considering a high-miles unit like this? Everything seems nice and tight and runs great.

I have never owned a Powerstroke before, anything to watch out for on a 1997?

Brent, I have two high mileage 7.3's. Old faithful, my '90 has 435,000 on it. Always been faithful, put in an injection pump at 300,000 and a tranny at 3?0,000. My '96 Power Stroke has 270,000 on and is still going strong with no indication of being a problem any time soon. However, this truck hasn't been as faithful and has left me stranded on several occasions. The main culprit has been the computer. Being a Power Stroke, it has to have that computer to run. Replaced that, not cheap, but everything is good now. It has a manual 5 speed transmission, which I like, but Ford used a two piece flywheel with springs, presumably to cushion and "sissyfy" that big motor. Well, guess what? That went to pieces at 180,000. I upfitted it with a solid flywheel- much better. The other wierd thing is the serpentine belt on the front of the motor. As you know, one belt goes around all the engine driven components. All you need is for just one of those to go to pieces and you are stranded again. Some of the idler pulleys have had the bearing go out multiple times- on the same pulley. I now carry spare bearings in the glove box. It left me stuck in Chicago once and north of Milwaukee once. How fun is that? At least the '90 could always limp home.
I guess what I'm saying is that I love the truck, and will upgrade to the same thing, only newer, and they last longer than a person might think, but more complicated isn't always better, in my opinion. I guess that part is here to stay though. BTW, I've never done injector O-rings on it.
Paul

if the price is right than it should suit you well. find out if it ever had injector o-rings done. they were a problem. i work for a ford dealer and we see o-rings fail all the time. once their fixed we have yet to have a problem. good luck.

Thanks for the tip. Is the o-ring procedure painful (expensive?). The price on the truck seems reasonable, so I need to factor in the potential repair if it hasn't been done.

it's not too bad. the injectors are in the head, centered above each piston, hence the name powerstroke. the valve cover gasket is reuseable unless it's leaking. if you have time and are mechanicly able it can be done at home. otherwise it's about a 1/2 days work for our tech. chances are good that it has been done already with 300k, i haven't seen many make it past 100k, but a few.

When do those O-rings usually start to go and what are the symptoms? I have a 1996 with only 18,000 on it. Thanks.
