I've heard that you should coat the head gasket before you install it, what do you coat it with?

Check your gasket. It might tell you.
The last few headgaskets I bought had "Sealant & Re-Torque Required" stamped right on them. I used a Permatex spray-on product made for that application.
Don't just use some kind of monkey-snot generic gasket sealer then wonder why it didn't hold, use the correct product and follow the directions.

I figured that the gasket manufacturer knew what was best, so that's what I did. I've gotten them from a Case/IH dealer and from NAPA. Same thing stamped on them all.

Just my opinion but a head gasket should be put on dry.The gasket goop will be squeezed out by the high torque put on it.However the aluminum paint trick is recommended in some early service manuals [before various sealers were even made maybe] and Ive used that also without problem.A slight coat of it will allow the gasket to seat a little better.I avoid anything "goop like"Like I said just my opinion Im sure lots of goops are on many motors without leaks.

I coppercoat all head gaskets I put on,, I dont know,, its like a common practice I do,, The reason is,, on most engines that have not been resurfaced for straightness, usually have a hint of warping in them,, the sealer helps fill in the gaps and keep it sealed a bit better. Coppercoat,, does stay in place, it does help heat transfer to keep the gasket a bit cooler in certain places, when the gaskets get really hot at times,, they loose the seal from expanding, and contracting, old workhorses can use all the preventative maintnence they can get. Some head gaskets you can get lucky and put em on dry, and not leak,, I have seen a few that does, and quite a few trhat I had to do it all over again,,, Chad

CHADS, do you coat all mating surfaces, or just the gasket?

I call it overkill, but all surfaces are coated, block, both sides of the gasket, and the head surface. you dont really have to spray the head, just coat the copper side of the gasket a bit more,, Chad
