Has anybody come up with a good way to repair the splins on the hydrawlic leaver to the shaft on the control valve. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Not a restoration quality repair, but some previous owner replaced the lever on my 330 with a box end wrench.

I think those splines wear out because of the side ways force from years of operation, If the levers were pushed and pulled straight they would last forever, I used JB weld on my neighbors probably 4 years ago and it is still OK.

On mine there is play sideways between the lever and the bolt on side cover.I think if there was a spring or something keeping a side load on the lever it wouldnt wobble so bad.

I could use some new ones myself.A bit of play in the splines on mine.
Dont know why they used aluminum back then....aluminum was rare and expensive, and doesnt hold up to heavy wear well.

Rare and expensive in the 50's? Recall that was when they were building B-52s, 707s, DC-8s, F-100, F-101, F-102, etc. Nope, there was plenty of aluminum around, just as there was in the 40's when they built all those planes for WWII. More expensive than steel or iron, but it cast real nice into intricate shapes, and machined real nice.

Yup,but you just didnt see it in everyday consumer use.Aluminum engine blocks? Aluminum water pumps? Aluminum radiators? Aluminum generator cases? Aluminum engine accessory brackets? Aluminum gooseneck housings? (even pot metal carburetors?) What we take for commonplace nowadays was deemed unheard of back in the 50s.

Maybe the best thing to do is Red Loctite the lever on? (but be prepared,it would take a torch to melt the stuff off).

The aluminum doesn't wear. The levers have a hardened insert with splines in them. The splines on the insert and the shafts is what wears. I've seen them drilled and a roll pin put in them. The copper idea sounds good, .001 -.002 shim stock might work too, it's tougher than the copper.
