I'm going to be working on a W30 my grandpa bought at an auction last year. Ran good, thought it was in good shape. But found a problem right before parking it for the winter. Began leaking water in the cylinders if it sat for a while, and if running, got LOTS of compression in the radiator.

Can't see any external head gasket leaks. Pulled the spark plugs, and all are an even carbon black, which would mean it isn't "burning" water. Compression seems pretty even on all four, 60psi or so with a cheap press in gauge.

OK, I'm starting to ramble...

I'm still HOPING it is the head gasket...but were the W/F-30s noted for any thing common like cracked heads, or sleeve problems? I just want to know if I should watch out for anything specific.

Also, what is the best service manual, and where can I get it? I tried the dealer, all I saw listed was the operators manual (which I bought).

They are most susseptible (30 series) to cracking to the outside behind the carb. I would expect that you have a bad gasket or sleeve.

I would pull the head and check that head gasket
and have the head magnafluxed. Is there any water
in the oil pan? Could be leakage from a sleeve.
I think having compression leak into the radiator
is the head gasket or a cracked head.

Someone posted on here this past week that he had checked 8 heads from the Farmall H and all were cracked. Hal
