I have a Farmall Super A that the seat was changed and I lost the serial number. Can anyone tell me the year of approx. year of manufacture given the following casting codes:
6-16-R Torque Tube
7-1-Q Transmission side
6882-QA Trans. top cover
2-2-Q Engine Block

351687-R1 number on Torque Tube
251061R number on engine

Any help would be appreciated.

You might have a replacement torque tube. Also the difference between the Feb engine block and the July transmission is a little long. There were only 80 Super A's built in 1947. Do you have hydraulics -- the torque tube has to be flat on top for attachment of the hydraulic reservoir, beginning with SA production in late 1947. Not sure you don't have parts from 3 tractors. IH assembled over 18000 SA's in 1948. That's 58 a day, assuming a 6 day week. I don't think they let their castings sit around any longer than it took them to cure. I don't think I have seen casting dates 5 months apart on an intact tractor, much less over a year.

It is either a 47 (Q) model that had the torque tube broken and replaced, or a 48 (R) model for which the engine and transmission housing sat around for quite a while before being assembled. Check the engine number stamped on the block to be sure. I would guess for 47.

Harold,
The only numbers on the engine block I can find seem to be cast in and not stamped. I will look again tonight. Thanks for your response. I will assume it is a 47 or 48.

Good Morning Nick, --- 22 / April / 2005 ---

The motor of your "Farmall Super A" ( 2*2*Q ) was made on Feb. 2, 1947 ----- but you would have to add 8 to 10 weeks for that motor to have
been assembled. Now then, if you could find
that type of number on the axlehouseing or transmission, and give us a read back, we could date your tractor.

April 15, 1947 would be the date of your motor.

Regards, Milton

Milton,
Thanks for your reply. The only other numbers on the trans. housing are the 7-1-Q casting code, whick would make it cast in 7/1/47? The number 351687-R1 is on the torque tube. It looks like this tractor was probalbly assembled sometime in 1948 wouldn't you think? That's close enough for me.

Good Morning Nick, --- 22 / April / 2005 ---

The CASTING DATE "7-1-Q" date July 1, 1947 . Add 8 to 10 weeks --- your "Farmall Super A" was assembled bstween Sept. 1 and Sept. 14, 1947.

The motor SERIAL NUMBER (or CASTING DATE) does not date a tractor.

Only the chassis CASTING DATE would date your tractor. You did your home work well.

Good luck with you IH tractor and have fun with it.

Serial number was on seat support of A/Super A tractors, which is apparantly gone on his tractor, so he will have to look at engine number which is stamped on block.
