I'm starting restoration on a 1952 Super C and I've found the ring gear is really chewed up. I recieved a new ring gear mail order and it doesnt have any bevel on the teeth. Is this normal? I always thought that the teeth on ring gears had to be beveled to allow the starter pinion to engage smoothly. The old ring gear is so badly damaged I cant tell if it originally had bevels so I thought maybe you guys might have some thoughts on this. Thanks in advance for your help.

I THOUGHT I was going to have to split Cmore and put in a new ring gear, as mine was pretty chewed up in a couple of places. But, viola!!, I got a new gear on the starter, filed down the ruff places on the ring gear, and now she starts like new, starter catches right off ALL the time, and hasn't locked up since! It's worth a try...cost me $70 bucks for starter rebuild, including new gear and spring. Cmore

I was thinking about doing that but the ring gear seems to be so hard a file wont touch it. Do you think a Dremel with a carbide bit would do the job?

They dont have to have a bevel. Most time you can just take old one off and turn it around and reinstall. Havent seen a replacement with a bevel for years.

Hey Lou, I just picked up a 1953 Super C that is my next candidate for restoration. It came with an extra engine that is the original one. I have yet to identify what engine is in the tractor, but it appears to be a 1956. The original engine was changed out because the hydraulic pump removed half of each tooth from the cam gear.

While I cannot answer this specifically for your "C", a lot of starter ring gears are NOT bevelled nowadays, and work just fine.
