I'm new to this board(hope the John Deere guys don't read this!). I'm thinking about buying a 1086 for field work.Is there anything that I should be looking at when I go and look at these tractors. I will probably be buying one at an auction or from a dealer. How many hours before you normally have clutch and TA trouble? How many hours normally before engine rebuild? Are they known for rear end problems? Do they start good in the cold( I live in Canada)?Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance,Paul.

I would have to say that the 1086 is the best starting tractor in the cold you can find. Will definitely start before any deere. I know its not a 1086 but our 886 always starts here in central michigan through out the winter, about two cranks and its started.

Paul My brother had a 1979 1086 it had 8000 hrs when he sold out had 1 head gasket 1 TA 1 set engine bearings after about 7000. He did not like the ride, but it was the best on fuel never more than 7 1/2 gallon an hour and we worked it hard but has to be a series B engine.

Engine, clutch, and TA life depend on how well it was taken care of. Clutch and TA aren't quite as reliable as a Deere Quad-Range, but a lot cheaper and easier to repair. The IH diesel dosen't have head gasket issues like Deeres. Only major issue with the 86 series was the shift linkage, tends to wear out fast and gets hard to find the gears. If you keep them adjusted and understand what's going on, they aren't too bad. The rear ends are real tough, but once again, depends on if it was abused or not. A good 400 series diesel will start a little easier than a 4430 or 4440. Using the block heater is a must below freezing.
