How big of a disc on 656D?

I have found a couple of used discs that I want to pull behind my IH 656D. One is a Brush Hog 8 foot, three point that was converted to a wheel disc. The owner says you need 100 hp for the disc - that seems excessive to me, depending on how you set it up. I have fairly heavy clay type soils with too many rocks.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Regards, Tip

Depends on the disk and soil conditions. We had a 10' John Deere that pulled harder than our 12' Kewaunee. We pulled both behind our 65hp CASE tractors. Generally I would say a good heavy 10' disk would be a good match for your IH in any soil conditions. Glenn F.

Thanks guys, that sounds more like it. The disk is a tandem, buried in the weeds, paint all gone at the local feed store. I called the owner and he said it was never used, purchased with a three point setup that no one wanted because it was too heavy for most three point tractors at the time. They ordered the wheel's from Brush Hog at some point, installed them but never sold it. The feed store owner is as tight as they come, but who knows, he may make me a deal I can't refuse.

Thanks again, Tip

You didn't say if that Bush Hog is an offset disk or not. If its just a standard tandem disk then 8 foot is too small for a 656. It should easily handle a 10-12 foot disc under any conditions. If its a heavy duty offset disk with big 24" cone blades, then 8 foot would be a full load and then some in clay soil.

Our 460G at 45 DBHP is happier than a pup shreddin' newspapers with a 10 footer. Ergo, the 656D at 54 DBHP with a 12 footer will be just dandy.

Depends on how fast and how deep. I pulled a 13 ft tandem behind my 560 gasser. In corn stalks it worked fine but in fall plowing it was really too much. This was in loamy soils with a fair amount of clay, but not a lot. I would think that the 656 will pull that 8 foot disk fine.

Hi Tip,

That 656D will pull a 12 foot disc all day long.

I agree, 12 ft, would be an even match for a 656.

And, we're talking with the wheels up too. Right, Rusty? :>)

Wheels up, blades in to the axles.

A 12-14"tandem wheel disk would make a nice load for the 656D. Disking plowed ground would make it set up and take notice.
