Well my worst nightmare is realized!A knock noise sounds like a rod started this morning after about 20 minutes working, oil pressure is good everything works ok but still a steady knock,I wonder could it be carbon on pistons let loose or should I just start tearing it down and check it out?? any ideas really appreciated Thanks Bob,,,

Check choke butter fly in carb to see if a screw is missing, had a SM with a screw imbedded in piston that caused an awfull knock

Bob - A failing camshaft gear can cause an ominous knocking also. It's not uncommon on these engines on account of the live hydraulic pump being driven off the cam gear. (I have replaced several over the years...)

If the knocking sound changes or disappears when you load the live hydraulic pump, a busted cam gear is the culprit.

If you hear the knock all the time when the engine is running, you can sometimes diagnose if it is a rod bearing by pulling off or shorting out one spark plug wire at a time and see if the knocking sound lessens on any one cylinder. If so it’s probably either the wrist pin or the rod bearing. Next, I’d pull the oil out, and see if there is any bearing material in the bottom of the pan or on the drain plug. If so, pull the pan and check the bearings as others have advised.

If the knock is most noticeable with no load on the engine and is affected by two adjoining cylinders, then it probably is a main bearing and you will need to pull the pan and check the bearings.

Something else that it could possibly be is the flywheel bolts coming loose. This can make a rhythmic knocking noise also, but usually this will go away when the clutch is pushed in.

Hope this helps…

Not to panic yet. Those 300U pans fit tight. With a little wear the crank will shift fore and aft allowing the rods to strike the pan. It is pretty easy to pull the pan (check for hit marks) and roll in new rod and main bearings. I've done it in the field with the plow in the furrow. I was much thinner then though and it was fun because I was play farming.

What? Play farming isn't allowed?

Hmmmm, whaddam' I gonna do now? Too scrawny to be a cowboy and too dumb to play lumberjack.

'Sides, the tree removal project here in Nebraska has been completed anyway.

No, I still think I gotta go play farmer. :>)

Rainin' down there?

Allan

Hi Bob,

Ouch! Darnit, didn't need that!

Carbon buildup will have more of a "rap" sound. If your noise has a deep, "thud-like" sound to it, chances are it's on the bottom.

Plus, the bottom end is where the load ends up on these old rascals and they do have a tendency to wear at the bearings.

Hope ya get 'er straightened out,

Allan

The easiest way is to pull the oil pan and look for debris in the bottom and then to check the rods for slop.
