I've had this '48 "C" for 10 years and never heard it run till last night. I had never been able to get a spark out of the mag that came on the used engine I put in a year or so ago and finally gave up on it and swapped in the distributor from the original engine. I had to pull the battery box one more time and rewire it for dist positive instead of the ground for the mag but then with a little snort of carb cleaner it fired right up. Now I've got to put the gas tank back on and see what else needs attention. So for those of you with a long, long, term side project, don't give up, the blue smoke in the garage is worth it in the end.

I would like to have a working mag as it is fun to be able to hand crank at a tractor show. I had a straight A for years that never had a battery and it always started on the 1st or 2nd pull. Once I get the rest of the tractor sorted out I may be in touch about getting it done. I have converted it to 12v so I think the dist will be OK as far as reliability goes.

You can hand crank with a distributer, also. Convenient when the battery is low and the starter takes all the current.

Of course, I need to make or buy a crank before I can do either at this point. I did put the gas tank on last night and it fired right up and purred like a kitten. Hydraulics were dry so I put oil in the reservoir and pulled the lever for the hitch. It came about 1/2 way up before one of the dry rotted hoses let go. I spent the next 2 hours cleaning up splattered oil but at least I know it still works. I'll put new hoses on it tonight and then see if it will move. I kept the clutch off the used motor so it shouldn't be stuck after only a year or so of sitting. I might cut some hay with this thing after all.
