544 IH Shifting

I just bought a 544 gas IH. I believe it is a 1969. The previous owner told me that in order to shift it, you had to have the T/A lever pulled back towards you. I assumed that he meant only while you were moving, but it seems to me that I have to pull the lever back first even when I am stopped and want to go from say 1st to reverse. Is this correct?

Also, I am planning to get a 3pt snow blower for it, any recommendations on type/size/models?

Thanks,
Jake

What you are describing probably is an indicator that the TA needs adjusting. See the owner’s manual or a shop manual for your model and carefully adjust it to spec. Then you should be able to shift gears easily when you are standing still. What happens is that the clutch on the planetary doesn’t completely disengage and the sprag part of the TA won’t allow the input shaft to the transmission to rotate and relieve the pressure on the gears to allow them to slide on the pinion shaft easily.

The other thing that I have experienced when the TA is adjusted correctly and this symptom persists is that the clutch is actually “hanging up” on the flywheel or pressure plate. I have noticed this when a metallic “dyna-life” button style clutch has been installed. These clutches are made of harder material and wear the flywheel and pressure plate in a curved pattern on the inside and outside diameters of the buttons. This creates enough friction to make it hard to shift unless you are moving slightly in the direction of the gear you are in. To cure this you need to reface the flywheel and replace the clutch and pressure plate. The old full-faced fiber clutches might slip easier under a load, but rarely caused this symptom.

Just some thoughts…

Jake,

Sounds to me like you need to adjust that clutch and the T/A linkage. That tractor should shift easily in either mode.

Okay guys, thanks for the information. I ordered a manual and it should arrive soon. Hopefully it will cover these topics. I have no experience working on tractors, but with some instructions, I should be able to handle the job.
