I'm glad Bill told you to loosen the main caps, I
thought about it later. I would check that pickup screen on your oil pump too. You should look at those rod bearings and use some plasi-gauge to see how much clearance you have now. I would mike the shaft for wear too. Hal

El Toro is right; the main bearings can be replaced with the crank in place. You can make a little tool from a nail or a cotter key that fits in one of the oil holes in the crank; then gently rotate the crank until the head of the tool contacts the old bearing and keep on turning until the bearing is pressed out. You have to turn in the direction away from the notch in the bearing.

Also I loosened all of the main caps first, then removed one at a time, R&R'ed the bearing, reinstalled the cap loosely, and moved on to the next one.

It is a fairly easy job, or at least mine was.

It's a good time to check your oil pump out, too; mine had the gasket blown out and the bottom plate was warped. After fixing that and with the new bearings, it has much better oil pressure.

Good luck,
Bill

Hi Jack, I found what R&R stands for in my manual. It's what you said, Remove and Reinstall.
It was under the steering section. Hal

I think the main inserts can be replaced after dropping the pan. The manual says to remove the retainer plate over the rear seal so you can remove the rear main bearing cap. Be careful when removing the inserts so you do not damage the
crankshaft machined suface. R&R could be removal
and reinstall.

If the crankshaft needs to be ground you will need to pull the engine. Hal
