I have a 1950 farmall M. I was wandering if I installed high dome pistons if I would have to change the head or do machine work to the heads. It is a distilate model. the new kits I was looking at said overbore from 3 7/8 to 4 inch overbore is that just from thinner sleeves.

I just did it to my '45 M. Worked fine and it runs great. Only problem is it made too much compression (along with a tight new engine) for the 6 volt battery to turn over. I had to go to 12 Volt.

the pistons will fit in any of the heads that came on a m. m+w used to make a piston to convert the low compression head to gasoline compression. it had a dome over an inch tall. if you want any amout of power from your m you need to get a 8060 or 8574 head. i could sell you ne if you would be interested.

On my H, the dome on the piston had a volume of about 20cc. The kerosene head was a little over 50ccs larger than the gas head. The head made 2.5X the difference that the pistons made. Your M should be somewhere along that same line.

If your M is a distilate engine, I think you will need to change the head to handle the higher compression of the dome pistons.
