I had a upper engine rebuild last winter and had only put 3 hrs. on engine when i started having power lloss problems.this got worse to the point that engine woukd not crank.I noticed that the mechanic had added a condensor to the coil? I pulled the plugs and no. 4 had heavy build-up of carbon on it.I replaced all 4 plugs, put on a new coil w/out condensor, and flushed fuel lines. after this the tractor cranked and ran smooth.does anyone know what is going on with this engine and will sae problems be likely to re occur. It is 157ci gas engine with about 5400 hrs. on it before upper rebuild.

You're right, it is a condensor, but used in this manner it's function is as an ignition noise suppressor. Stops static and such from interfering with a radio and other electronic devices. It would have absolutely no effect on the performance of your tractor.

Condensor?

The condensor is inside the distributor cap, and your engine won't run without it.

Are you maybe thinking of a BALLAST RESISTOR in between the battery wire and the coil? The only reason for a ballast resistor is if you use a 6V coil in a 12V system. Since a 454 should've had a 12V battery and a 12V coil right from the get-go, it makes no sense why the mechanic would do that.

You were probably getting a weak spark due to the resistor reducing the voltage to the coil. That caused incomplete fuel burn and probably fouled the plugs.

With today's junk gasoline, you may get fouled plugs from time to time. When it happens, have a fresh set handy is all.

It did not make any sense to me either why a condensor was installed on the positive side of the coil. If that caused a weak spark them hopefully my problem is resolved.
