I was using the M today, putting in the new garden, and noticed a bit of a miss. At the time I was pulling a 9 shank Graham-Hoeme chisel plow, approx. 8 - 10 inches deep in loosened soil. She'd start hunkerin' down to pull real good, the exhaust tone deepened and the plume started shading black...Uh, sorry, I mean under a big bad load, it will occasionally drop back to 3 cylinders, then pick back up. Is this a carb problem, or is it due to the 2 1/2" crack I found up the center of the manifold? Better yet, since the ol' boy I bought it from said it had been sitting a few months, I should clean and possibly kit the carb anyway?

Thanks much for your assistance, it is appreciated.

Y'all take care.
Anthony

pretty good looking M Anthony, Should be worth fixing right. I'd do a search on ebay. There is a guy that sells American made manifolds quite reasonable. I bought one for $130 for an H last winter and he even paid the shipping but I think he has raised his prices slightly since. My other suggestion would be points and plugs.

You might as well quit screwing around trying to do a half axx fix and get a good used manifold..... .

NFW. Bite the bullet and find a manifold that is good. There are zillions of them out there. Plane the replacement 040, new gaskets, and you are better than new. BTW while it's off, give it a good sanding with a 80 grit flap wheel, then 6-8 coats of hi gloss black 700 degree or better paint for a great look.

Dunno what I did wrong, the pic didn't show. It's in tractor photos, under 1945 M. Anyway, I forgot to inquire as to what the best fix is for the crack? It's right up the center, maybe 1 1/2 to 2 inches about the carb mounting bolt. A friend suggested drilling a hole at both ends, then covering with JB Weld? I dunno 'bout that one. It may be a temporary fix, but will it last?

Thanks again,
Anthony
