I am in negotiations to buy a IH Cub Loboy (serial number 14194) made in 1948. The deal would include the belly mower, a snow plow, and a McCormick dump trailer. The equipment seems to have had 2 previous owners and works reasonably well. The owner expects $3,200 but I am told by a friend that the fairer price would be about $2,500. Might you give me any guidance? Pictures of the equipment are available at http://mywebpages.comcast.net/rrada/tractor/tractor.htm. Thank you, Roy Rada in Baltimore, Maryland

The unit is not priced out of line. Deal is between you and seller not what your friend thinks just look under tractor adds and you will get some good ideas on pricing.

Mr Rada, Happy to tell you that little tractor was made in 1961 not 1948. The loboys first came out in 1955. Here's a good website to help you out.

My mistake shows you how ignorant I am about such things. I had read that web site to come to the date of 1948 but see now on closer read that the LoBoys are in a separate column and my serial number matches to 1961 as you said. The newer date makes me wonder whether one person may have owned it for 40 years -- this tractor was in the estate of Earl Watson but he's dead and no one seems to know when he got it (I don't suppose that International Harvester would have kept records that long on who purchased individual tractors). How does this revised date affect the fair sale price?
Thank you again, Roy

Roy, It is really hard for someone else to come up with a relatively close value without seeing and hearing the tractor run. One thing about negotiating a good price with the seller is that he has it and you may want it. If you two can agree on a price that you are both happy with I believe you will have yourself a new tractor and some toys to go with it.

Bob,
I was trained as a doctor and am amazed with what an experienced doctor can tell with a few seconds of listening to someone's heart through a stethoscope. I can imagine that an experienced tractor person can do something like that with one look and listen to a tractor motor. My experience with tractors is virtually nill. Today I've been further experimenting with the LoBoy and am encountering two problems -- the battery is not recharging and dies and the pulley comes off the belly mower when I go on an incline and I can hardly get the pulley correctly repositioned. I am babbling but appreciate your advice which is sound.
Roy
